Bought a Brinkman a couple years ago for about $125. Wouldn't trade it for the world. They now sell for about $300-350 Saw one in a do-it-yourself book that used an old fridge. You build a firepit several feet away. Use teracotta drain pipe to the bottom of the fridge. Put a hole in the top of the fridge with a flap to control the smoke flow. Sounds like it would work great but would not be very portable.

I have one made out of an old water heater. You need to find an older one that does not have the insulation sprayed inside the outer jacket. I took the grill out of an old chracoal grill that was the right size to fit inside and placed it about a foot down from the top. This was a gas water heater so it already has a "fire door" at the bottom where the pilot light and gas fittings were.
I have also seen them made out of fridges but using black iron stove pipe. Do not use galvanized metal under any circumstances. The Zinc coating gives off poisonous fumes when burned. You can however take galvanized metal and a wire wheel in a side grinder and strip the coating off. This however will be very prone to rusting.

I just burned out the bottom of the fire box this Spring. I could not even GUESS how much meat I have cooked on it.

So what did you decide to do?
I know Nitro was talking about building one of his own.
