Today, was a day like none other... I was given a six week old choc lab for christmas by my loving wife, she I had always wanted one...well as he got older he retrieved a little and then quit doing that, took him until he was 3 months to learn his name, he was pretty stupid acting...Iwanted to give him away...everyopne said,"be patient, males are very immature till they get a little older"...so I waited, and he showed slight improvement at six months , still not retrieving, and wouldn't swim at all...well today on may 19th at seven months, this happened... it just all clicked today, I got in the water and helped him swim, once he figured out he wouldn't sink, you couldn't keep him out of it...then he made about ten retrieves, a couple rather long ones... i am still in shock

Good deal cuz. Hang in there man them males are slow to learn. I have a seven month female black lab I'm training myself. She's been inconsistent from session to session but all in all she's coming along great. Where were you at in the pictures? Did you have some kind of moccasin repellent on?

I have a 6yoa ylf that made her first retrieve on a duck at 10months of age. And that was a blind retrieve at that. Then things went downhill for a while. But I have to say that she is a great duck dog now. Last year was her best year yet. She made some blunders the year before, but that was my fault and not hers. Have to admit, I am still learning this training game myself. Only took 6 years to get a grasp. Now I am working a year old blm. I will atest to what they have said about males. Been many a time I came to close to killing this one ;D I took him to Memphis last year to the DU Great Outdoor Festival. He was around 8-9 weeks of age and was making steady 30yd retrieves in the water. Everyone there was amazed. Even had two different guys offer me $500 for him on the spot. Stupid me turned it down because I got the pup for my son. Males are harder to train but I believe well worth the aggravation over time. Just be patient. Deke is getting on the FF table soon and I envision a steep investment in an E-collar real soon too.

Once he's trained, it'll all be worth it.
