The Senate Finance Committee just passed a bill and sent it to the full Senate for a vote to raise the federal tax on cigars to 53.13% This is designed to raise 35 billion for SCHIP, State Children's Health Insurance Program. Here's the kicker not only do they want to raise the cigar tax but they want to collect a floor tax on existing inventory. In other words if this law went into effect today I would have to send the feds a check for $27,000 for the cigars in my store. If this passes I will sell off my inventory and go out of business and I'm sure I'm not the only one.
So please call your senators immediately ask them to vote no for this method of funding this program. (I don't care if you are for the program or not, I personally am not for the program, but this tax is not the way to fund it.)
