what dio you consider hunting accuracy. I hear guys say hit a plate every time and thats your effective range. I think if you can hit a 4" circle every time then thats your max. 40yrds is my max and only if conditions are perfect. I prefer 30 and under for deer and hogs. If I was elk hunting I might go alittle further.

With as jacked up as I get 30 would be my max at a deer. In the back yard with a 3d target Ive gone back to 80 or so and stayed in the lungs.

Im pretty much the same. If I cant keep the shots in an area about half the size of the vitals every shot then I dont shoot that distance out in the woods. 30 yards is the maximum shot I would take under hunting conditions. I have only killed a few over 25 yards though.

30 yds would be my max too. Early in the season it's almost impossible to get a 30 yd shot around here. After the leaves fall though it's a different story.

I ruin arrows at 50 yards if I shoot groups. My longest kill was a tad over 40 yards.I will shoot to 50.

I practice in the yard up to 40 but in the woods hunting I make 30 yards my limit.

i think whatever your comfortable with. "a mans got to know his limitations" practicing out to 40 or 45 makes those 25 yrd shots a piece of cake

I prefer the shorter range bowshots where arrow speed is high, accuracy is very good, and reaction time before impact is short.
Even though an archer can shoot stationary bow targets well at known long range, hitting a live deer at guestimated long range is risky at best. Their lightning quick reaction to the sound of the bow shot in the still quiet woods can turn a good situation bad in a flash.
Good luck and big blood trails to all.

20yd max where I hunt with my recurve. Really 15 yds and less would be more like it.

Truth even with Crossbow I can put my Arrows in a 3" circle at 40 yards.I'd just not shoot that distance.
30 yards is my longest shot on a Deer so far.But 80 yards is my longest with a Firearm.

I'll take a shot out to 40 or 45 if everything is right, but usually I wait for 30 and under. As far as the paper plate rule. I think that was in the days of all recurve and long bow shooters. I think most will tell you today that if you can't keep a lot tighter group you're beyond your range. If you want a number I'd say 4 or 5 inches max. You throw in the nervous at the moment of truth, a couple yards off with your range estimation and the 4 or 5 inch group grows REAL fast.

Maybe Im wierd, but lately I have been trying to see how close I can get a shot. I dont think I have ever shot a deer past 20 yards, and most have been within 15 yards. I dont usually set up where I can shoot any farther than that.
