I live in TN and my son can juvenile hunt this year. He is six any suggestion on a rifle. I've looked at the ruger compacts, but worry that the 16.5" barrel will have more recoil and too much muzzle blast, but the short length is a big plus. I thought about the .308 with managed recoil loads with a simms recoil pad to reduce the recoil or is that still to much? This way he could still use the gun when is gets older without having to buy another gun. Any help would be appreciated.

My best friends daughter started hunting at the same age and was shooting a Browning Abolt .270 with the BOSS. She has also used a Browning Abolt BOSS .2506 to kill deer. The BOSS REALLY works!

Just remember they are REALLY loud. We have always made her use ear muffs before shooting at anything.

I checked out the video. How much recoil is reduced with this design?

A lot. I think they say around 33-35%. It feels like more. The 2506 with the BOSS is a dream to shoot, I have a 30-06 BAR with the BOSS and there is a HUGE difference in it and my other 3006s.

Mark, you should look at a 243 or a 6.5x55.Both of these calibers have low recoil and the muzzle blast is moderate. They're also more than adequate for deer sized game,I wouldn't be afraid to shoot an elk with either one too.

I agree that 308 is alot of gun for a 6 year old even with light loads. Try a single shot 243 or even a 22-250 if its legal in Tennesse. My Nephews started out with 22 mags to learn to shoot the stepped up to 243 and it plenty of gun for deer. Try the 85 gr loads and keep the shots under 100 yrds and he will be fine. I have killed alot of deer with my 243 100gr out to 225yrds and wouldn,t hesitate to go a little further under the right conditions. The 22-250 is a little light in my opinion but I know people who kill alot of deer with them. Whatever you do don't get him more gun than he can handle cause it will cause him to flinch or worse get turned off of hunting.
