Good question....... 1st, you gotta kinda narrow your desire down......bolt, single, lever? And then you gotta figure on caliber. If you lookin for an *all around* type caliber, I'll bet a .270 or 30-06 would work well for you.......possible even a .30-30. Maybe .243? Most people here know that I have particular criteria for calibers. Mainly, Walmart has to sell it. I can walk into one at anytime of the day or night and get what I need. Also, they are EVERYWHERE. If I need .223 for my coyote gun at 3 in the morning, I can get it. If I need ammo for a gun chambered in .247 Lazzeroni, I'm screwed. As for the gun itself, there are ALOT of nice, quality guns out there that won't make your bank account empty. Any of the Savage products are a good safe bet. They chamber most everything in a caliber you can get at Walmart. Actually, Walmart offers the Savage 111fcxp3 (scoped) for $336. Mossberg has introduce recently the 100ATR availible ONLY in .270 and .30-06. You like Mossbergs, right? Me too. MSRP under $400. Braztech offers single shot rifles in some of the major calibers for less than $170. H&R and NEF (both made by Marlin and both single shot, by the way) are VERY respected in the hunting world for being very accurate and a good value. I think you can pick one of these up brand new for less than $250. AND worth every dime. Hope this helps some.....good luck!!

Winchester Model 94 30-30. When I got mine in the 70's I think they were going for $150.

Dollar for dollar nothing beats a Savage. They kick like hell though. Cant go wrong with any of the H&R/NEFs or Remingtons either though.

I guess some items are "regional" too. When I got to Marlin, Tx., they have a HUGE turkey area and the one close to my house ain't that big.

I had a friend tell me today that Wally World could get any H&R from 30-06 on down that you wanted for less than 250 bucks. He said that you just had to ask to see the special order catalog because they didn't keep a lot of them in stock, he said it took about a week to get one in if you done that.

natalie, unless you don't mind heavy recoil, i wouldn't go any bigger than a .270. a .243 will kill any deer around, but you better put that small pill in the boiler room. keep in mind, you get what you pay for. as for the wally world scenario.... i try to buy my stuff from AMERICAN companies or suppliers. if i gotta pay a few more bucks to patronize american companies, i'm glad to do it. any of the aforementioned manufacturers can be ordered from yer local gun dealer.
