gonna get a new 06 this year...killed all but my first with a single shot 06..the first was with a 243. anybody got any ideas on what I should look for? not to expensive though...something reasonable
I use 180 gr, but little bro loaded me some 220 gr to try. He also loaded me some 180 gr black talons. The longest shot I take here is about 45-50 yds. I figure with the 220 a shot in the shoulder will probably be best, being that close and a shot on the money spot might just pass through. Every deer I have taken has dropped on the spot with 180's..the 220's on the shoulder should knock him down right quick like...anybody ever shoot 220's?

I did in a Savage 110 and still have a damn flinch from it at times. I was about 14 then. Savage makes a really good gun for the money. If not then Remington for cheaper brands.

Savage would be a fine suggestion. They are famous for "out of the box" accuracy. The also have that new trigger out; the Accu-Trigger. I have dry fired one but never live.
Also, there are some NICE single shots out there and some of them are a HUGE value. You could get rifle, super nice scope and rings for less than $400.

Oh......and for the bullet:
I use 150 gr. in my 7mm and .30-30 and they seem to work pretty well. I like the Power Point Plus by Winchester. If you like the CoreLokt, you might give that a try in the 180's. I'd see what grouped best and go with that.

Ive always used 150grn core-locts in my 06s. Have killed em from a couple feet to 300yds with no problems.

for some reason I have always liked the 180gr... not sure what the bullet is called but it's round not pointed...every der has dropped in its track with those so I stuck to them

I load a 165gr pill for my 30-06,it kills everything it touches ;D.The 220gr is alot of bullet and IMHO is better suited for heavy game like elk and bears.

BN..never tried anything but the 180's...our elk and bear population is..well..we don't have any... ;D
this will be the first time I have shot a 220.gr
they grouped nice according to little bro at a 100 yds I figure at such close range as all my shots are if I hit them in the sweet spot will only get a pass through and will have to blood trail the deer, and was thinking that if I hit them in the spine neck or shoulder blades they should knock them off their feet...I hate to track deer

If all you are shooting is 50 yards bro I would go 30-30 with 170grain Remington Core-Lok. A neck-shot with this round at that range will knock them off their feet and it won't knock you down.

Id just shoot some 150s. Ive only had 2 deer move after they took one. One was a doe at about 200yds and she MIGHT have went 40yds, the other was a doe at around 40yds, she was just stubborn and made it about 10yds.

I shoot 150s out of my .30-30 and at 50 yards, I'll gaurantee you a 150 or 170 is enough to smack down anything in Texas like someone cut their legs out from under them. That big hog I hammered in January was popped with my .30-30 at about 40 yards. The bullet went clean through and she ran about 20 yards. I bet the last 10 she was dead already.

I'm thinking a 220 gr . in the shoulder , their isn't going to be much eating left on the front end . Pull back behind the shoulder poke a hole in the lung , the bullet shock in this area will do the job . If he goes any place it won't be far ! And he will leaving a blood trail that a blind man can fallow . I stopped using them on moose because of meat loss ! I only use now 165 gr. bullet . Less meat loss . Regards Bullet

I shoot a 30-06 NEF Handi-Rifle. I use 150gr. balistic tips. I have it topped with a Simmons 44 Mag scope. I have had good results with this combo. BUT, it kicks like a mule!
My son uses the NEF Handi-Rifle in 243. 90 gr soft points. It is topped with a Simmons 3-9X40 scope. It kills em just as dead with a lot less kick.

a 150gr. bullet, punched through the lungs, will kill any deer around within 50yds. i've shot all the different weights, and went back to the 150 for the tighter groups. sometimes less is more. the important thing is putting 'er in the breadbox.
