Yeah you can deffinitly be overgunned. .50BMG will kill the hell out of squirels but you wont be cooking much now will you?
The most important question; does it work for you, you seem to have answered. Shot placment and range are going to play a big factor here. I am at the complete other end of the spectrum and don't want to be overgunned, but then again the last deer I shot was at about 15 yards. I don't even want to see what a .338 is going to do to a 100# doe at that range. I shoot 7.62x39 and love the hell out of it. I would not shoot a deer at anywhere near the ranges some of you guys are shooting.
Again thats what makes this place cool. We have hunters from lots of different enviroments. Just wish I had the cash to visit some of yall.

Now a squril with a 50? well that would defin6tly mean a head shot if any meat was to be left.
The head shots if you want to take them go ahead. I know with my traying i could do it but still dont like them. its a persional choice.
As far as the close range goes in my close spots i use the 45-70 it normaly stright through.
now the 338 at 15yds would be a bit much evan with the heaver bullets the volicity would still be high.
