redoak, i have 2 rem .7600,brand new , i hate them .1 is a .270 win.i used it one year and went to squezze the trigger on a buck and nothing. here i did not have the shell in deep enough.we had kids in our crew almost shoot their dads with pumps.same thing they did not slam the pump hard enough and when they did they had their finger on the trigger.bang, off it goes.you have to work the pump [hard] for them to work good. if a buck is staring you in the eye and you have to chamber that second shell slow and quite, you cant do it with a pump. guns handle nice, i like the feel of a 7600 rem, they aim good a little heavy for my tastes but good overall.i hope i am not making you mad or anyone else.i seen it all ,done it all, killed and hunted many bucks, uncles 10 total and brothers etc. we all hunted hard here and i have seen what works and does not.i guess you could say i am [something special] when it comes to guns for whitetail deer.not many have knowledge i do on this. now if you are hunting tigers, elk, moose,i am not the person that can help.but on deer,i know.take care

No offense taken. I guese I am still a bit confused about the action part. Yeah I know you have to mean it with a pump or it dosen't seat the round. Plus pumps seem to work better once they are good and broke in.
Maybe its me but I stay piped at all times. That means if I fire I reload. So maybe that is where I can't understand a deer hearing the action. He is sure going to hear the first shot.
Unless I am using a shot-gun I am using an auto anyway.

I really have no prefference. I like my bolts, but then I like my levers, but then I like my semi autos... I guess whichever I have in my hand that day is... Unless I miss!

Hi All, I would go for a Bolt action or a Single shot, have no lever actions unless you count the Martini-Enfield is .303" it's a lever operarted tilting block single shot. The only pump I am familar with is the old Mossberg 500 Slugster, never had a problem chambering a round on that, it sounds like some serious gun handling basics are needing to be taught in some areas A bolt action can be reloading at the shoulder, I have trouble doing it just now due to an arm/shoulder injury on the left side but once that's cleared then it wil be back to normal again ;D and then there are the straigh pull bolt actions like the Blaser 93 and my Mauser M96, these are a since to reload in the shoulder ;D quick too

Bolt all the way. I have taken alot of deer with my Remington Model 4 ( semi auto) but I like the accuracy with a bolt and reliability.

If you need two shots then you need to go back to the range.

Hi Jeremy, I shot my Whitetail buck, the first one last November twice. The first shot was fatal, but he showed no sign of the hit just ran about 35 yards at an angle behind my stand towards the creek, as he stopped to look back down his trail. I shot him again and he took three steps and keeled over. The first shot took out both lungs and the top of the heart using a Hornady 139 BTSP 7mm bullet at about 2850fps in 7x57. I certainly didn't want him falling down that creek bank and having to drag him back up that nearly shear bank, no sir. Thinking back I should have maybe taken a neck shot but at the time I took the normal killing shot and at least it didn't damage the cape ;D which I am still waiting on getting back from being mounted Oh he tasted good too what little I got to eat of him that is, it's a real bummer not being able to bring any meat home

Well I think two shots are better than hand to hoof combat.

Hi All, No neither the US nor the British customs will allow it so we ate some in camp (tenderloins and backstraps) and the rest was given to a local poorer family who were grateful so it didn't go to waste. The area we were hunting in has high unemployment I am told since the major employer closed down Giving away the carcase also helped me as I could spend the time that I woudl have spent butchering it hunting instead. I shot a total of three Deer during the week, the other two were jointed up and cooled then shipped back with my host and his brothers to share out between them and a friend who was too ill to hunt so again none was wasted ;D With a lot of luck I amy be able to amke it back again this fal, although I only have a couple of weeks left really to get the permits organised as the BATF take an age to process a form 6, well no that's not true they process it pretty quick then just sit on it and don't send it out, Grrrrr

Hunters for the Hungry, bro....very good cause. Still sorry you could not take a heap back to the homeland. Come to Texas for a week and let's do a goose/duck combo. We'll eat everything before you go home. Stay with me. Save ya some dollars! ;D
