hope i dont offend anyone on this or gun rec. but i thought this would be good info to share.the best scopes made are [leoupold]i had one that was broke from 30 years ago.3x9x40 with parralax adj. i sent it in to them this year to see if they could fix it. they sent me a brand new scope 4x12 x40 with parralex adj as 3x9 they dont make anymore.wow.i sent aletter with it how i broke it when i dropped my gun.these cheap tasco etc scopes are throw away scopes. hey, those tasco are nice scopes but i want a scope if it breaks to get it repaiired.leopold sent me a [new] scope, no questions asked.guess what, this new scope is better made than the 30 year old one.i paid i45 dollars in 1971 for that scope and the one they sent me was listed for 400 dollars now.take care

Yeah bro.....not many manufacturers do business like that any more. That's what VALUE is. Drop a Tasco and it breaks...buy a new one. Drop a Leupold and they send you a new one at no cost. BTW, I moved this down to rifles bro.

I have three Tasco's the oldest is 31 years old and the youngest is 15 years old. I'm still waiting to break one so I can find out how their service is. ;D Seriously if I broke one, still not sure how to do that, I know I would just buy another one. I also know that a Leupold is a far superior product to even my Tasco World Class. I'm just a cheapskate.

I shoot a $185 rifle. If I'm not going to spend high dollars on a gun , I sure ain't going to on a scope. I go by the rule of thumb that the scope should cost about the same as the rifle. I use the Simmons 44mag on both of my deer rifles. I have never had any trouble with these scopes holding zero or breaking.

Hi All, I have been reading this thread and thinking, on my recent trip to the US I used a 6x42 Schmidt & Bender fitted to my BSA CF2 7x57 Rifle in Apel Roll off mounts. I do have a couple of Leupolds, one a M8 $x compact which lives on my Brno Model 2 Rimfire rifle and a Vari X 111 2.5-8x which is fitted to my Parker-Hale model 1200 Lightweight in 7.92mm (8x57). The Schmidt was on another rifle but an old S/H 3-9x42 Lisenfeld scope that i had on the BSA started playing up, so I had to pinch one off another rifle to get it sorted for the trip, I thought about the Leupld, but the Schmidt got the call as te reticle is better German N04 and it's brighter, as it turned out i did not need the extra light gathering this time but it's nice to have it just in case. Oh and the Schmidt cost me less tan than the Leupold would have done

I own 4 leupolds, 3 vari-x II, and a Vari-x I, all 3-9x40 love em, cant say ive ever had a problem with em, i also own a bushnell trohpy, a bsa catseye, a tasco pistol scope and a couple simmons, not bad scopes, i like my bsa on my shotgun, but they dont compare to the clarity and preciseness you get with a leupold, for anybody on a budget the vari-x I scopes are definitely something to consider, i got a brand new one on a trade this year and love it cant tell a difference really between it and the vari-x II, will prolly get the 4-12 model when i get my new rifle.

You know,I've been a Weaver fan for years and the few I have left are still good scopes.I don't own any of their new ones and couldn't say how good they are anymore.I also have a couple Redfield scopes, one is older than me and it's as clear as the day it was made.
I own a few magnum rifles and my rule of thumb is to put the best scope on any rifle you can afford.A big magnum will ruin a cheap scope in no time flat.
A buddy of mine put a Bushnell Banner on his 338 Win. Mag and that scope didn't last one year. Also buy the best rings and bases you can afford too.Too oftewn these get overlooked and the scope gets blamed for poor performance.

your right on the bases.at one time all we could buy were weaver scopes.they broke many times ,trust me on that and you could not get them repaired.i had redfields, still have 6 in my gun room. they are the [widefield] also. they were nice scopes but where do you get them fixed?my story above is true as i am. i was shocked when leopold sent me a scope,a better one, being over 30 years ago.i guess i am also not a fan of tasco.my reason is not the quality and repairs its the country made in. when i buy a gun made in usa i want a usa scope on it. i just think it looks and feels funny at the shooting range when one of my friends say, i paid 800 dollars for this remington rifle and there sits that [tasco] scope on top of it.it just does not feel or look right to me.as for cost, i can tell you this. i see many millionaires at the range with [tasco ] scopes on their rifles and i see people on [welfare], not knocking them ,with 800 dollar guns and 500 leopold scopes on top.so,after seeing this,i am not cheap and not going to live forever.i want the best i can get for my guns.many people cannot afford the better scopes, thats ok, but what i am seeing is rich bu ;)y cheap scopes and poor the best scopes. i see it every weekend here at the club, take care.

Hoyt, you got that right.I don't often see anyone using open sights anymore either.Actually I do see a few first timers with the 30-30 or 303 with no scopes and think...alright.
I learned to shoot with iron sights and some guys think I can't shoot as good as them without a scope,I like proving them wrong. ;D

I cant hit a deer with irons, I dont know why. I can shoot the crap out of tree rats with my non-scoped .22. I missed 5 bucks opening AM of our 1st ML season here, hit one in the head the 2nd day(was aiming at the whitespot on its neck) The 2nd year they allowed scopes and my problem was fixed

we were raised on [peep] sights and weaver scopes next.when i started hunting in 1965 ,very few had a scope.if you want to shoot the pants off everybody, get a [peep] site on your rifle. i use one on top of my scope.it attaches with plastic rings around the scope.deadly.take a .22cal and put a [peep] sight on it. you will possibly take your scopes off after all the things you hit.they are deadly.i am very happy with my [peep] on top of the scope.you can use both then, close shot running[peep] far away the scope.here is true stories. i had a .22 hornet.i used to hit turkeys in the head with that [peep] site and running i would hit them to in the body. with a [peep] you do not have to worry about the rear site like on a dovetail etc. sights.if you can see the front sight just squezze, its that easy.sorry i talked so much, but i do [love] a peep sight.
