I shoot the small stuff .17, . 19, .224, 6mm PPC, 6mm T/CU. The T/CU is nothing more than a .223 REM. necked up to take a .243 bullet. I don't hunt big game with a gun, don't have a use for anything in the .263 on up. I do have a few larger cal's but they are just play things for my Contenders 45-70 and 35 Rem. If I had to pick a favorite. ------ I sure like the .19/223, haven't done a lot of load work on this one, yet. I like the .17's and the PPC in the Contender. And the 45-70, you should see the look on a guy's face when I put that big azz cartrage in a 15 inch Contender barrel and reach it to him for the first time. 9 out of 10 times the guy will reach it back to me and say--You first. I have no favorites---- I like them all.

that 7mm-08 is a good caliber.model 7 is good too if you like bolt actions for hunting, i dont.i have a post here why. the 7mm bullet is a favorite of the germans, they know there bullets.7mm-08 is offered in the savage model 99.its as good as my 300 sav.and yes the best weight is 139 gr. for this. i have 2 of them.i dont use them anymore do to i like less recoil and weight. my favorites for everything up to elk are, .250sav,.300 sav,.243 sav.it would take me weeks to explain all the reasons why.if you need something to hunt grizz with or shoot 500 yards, then there are only 2. 7mm rem. mag or .270,so ,there you have it.which 2 would i pick for all around hunting grizz and deer etc. [ .243 for up to deer] [ 7 mm rem mag] for long shots and grizz.

The more I shoot my SKS the more I like the caliber. As long as it is used as it was intended (200lb target 100yds) I just dont think it can be beat. Recoil is almost zilch and with the proper round selection the damage can be impressive. I am not just talking about deer and such as I have also fired FMJs and APs at hard targets. Besides this is the same caliber as the Ak-47 not real sure but I think it is probably behind the .22 as far as most common and dirt cheap in the world.
Not that I am overly partial, with the overtime kicking in at work I do plan to expand the arsenal.

The SKS shoots the 7.62x39 ammo. I had one with an AK style clip (chinese paratrooper model). I traded it for a more 'traditional' hunting rifle. I have kicked myself ever since.

they rated all the hunting guns and calibers and guess what was the best for hunting up to elk? the .300 sav model 99.i have the articile if anyone would like to read it.this is great gun, not perfect but a deadly killer of deer and bear. i have 3 of them , 1 is pre war take down.they had a lot of headspace so you only get 3 reloads out of 1 shell. thats ok with me as i have 1,000 mtys.the test was done by petersons hunting. what else can i say, i know my deer hunting guns, that for sure. i guess others do to.

Can we change our answer? Seriously though. I Still love an 06, but my .260 grows on me more with every deer I shoot with it. BTW im shooting the 120grn remington ballistic tips in the .260.

Hi All, I have used the 6.5x55mm (.260) most for deer, usually with Speer 120grn Hotcore bullets, I have used the Hornady 160gn once on a Roe Doe, not good too much bullet weight for such a small Deer. Killed it deader than dead but the tissue damage on the Off side shoulder was an awful lot. The old 7x57mm is another good one, used that one in Missouri and ten the 308 and 303 are also good. So no I don't have a favorite I use them all whatever takes my fancy at the time I can see the ole .270 getting some field time soon

I have a 30-06, but now spend all my time afield with one of my .308s. I have three, two Remingtons and one Styer
