I'm torn between the .270 and .308 ;D Had lots of success with both so it's a toss up with both ;D

I like alot of calibers but I hunt with a 7mm magnum.Where I live you can expect to shoot anything from white-tail deer up to moose and elk at any given time.

Yep....I'm with Blue.
If I know I may need to take a long shot, I'll bring my 7mm Rem Mag. In West Texas, that round works well for me. If it's pigs in brush, I like a .45-70. Drop a hog real fast with that one even with branches in the way. If it's whitetails out of one of my blinds or tripods, I like my .30-30 with iron sights.

with out a dought the 45-70.
i love that round. its strictily close range but when you hit some thing with that big slow moving slug of lead it dosent go far. i have had a good run of one shot instant drops with it.
for longer ranges the old 06 is my stand by for now.
but i have been things of something a little biger.

30. Anything in .30 I don't care whter it's a 30-30 or a 30-06 or 300 WinMag. I just love a 30 caliber. Of course my rifle is 7mm-08. It's a long story.

I agree with gulfcoaster. 30-06 is the standard but I love a 243 for deer.
My favorite to shoot at the range is a 50 cal inline muzzleloader.

I love my 7mm Mag. I have killed deer at all ranges, out to 462 measured yards. It is the one rifle I have that shoots right where I want it to. Sometimes I think it has auto-pilot.

single shot 30-06...
BT I am seriously thinking of getting a 45-70 as my next rifle..man I just like the look and every shot on my place is close range but one..
do you have any negative to say about the rifle?

But the 300UltraMag aint nuttin to mess with.lol my shoulder has a big bruise from shooting it.

As is shown above, there is no 'best gun' or 'best caliber'. It all depends on what you like. Single shot, bolt, lever, pump, autoloader... they all have their positives & negatives. .17 to 12 ga. they all have their place. Some like knock down power. Some like hyper velocity. Some people want to blend in. Some people just like to be different. Everyone has an opinion. There is no right or wrong.
Mud, I say get the 45-70. If you don't like it, I'm sure you will have no trouble finding someone who will.
