Hi All,
Well as it's been such a beautiful spring day, I thought I would drive on over to the paddock and sit in the high seat and see what's about, I took a couple of rifles with me both .303's. My newly aquired BSA E sporter and the Martini AC11 with some 215 grn home loads using some Kynoch bullets I picked up a few years back Well at first as I stalked down through the wood very slowly I only saw a couple of Wabbits.
Oooooooo I am going to get thet pesky Wabbit! 8o
So up into the seat and settle in to watch and wait, did a few practice mounts to get an idea of the sight picture with the Martini, saw a couple more Wabbits, two Pheasents and lots of birds but nothing worth shooting yet.:rolleyes
At 7pm another Wabbit was sorely testing me by sitting right opposite me at about 70 yards, I put the Martini down on the seat platform next to me and lifted up the BSA from where it was hanging to my right of the seat by it's sling. I put that cross hair right on his noggin then the eye, all the wabbit did was watch me as if daring me to do something :rolleyes , As I lifted the rifle down I noticed a Grey squirrel up in a small tree above the Wabbit, so I lined up on him. Hmm the reticle is not quite focused properly, so I played with the eye piece until I was happy, sighted on the squirrel and watched some Pheasents fighting over hens through the high hedge in the next field. Well this lifting the rifle up and down finaly got Mr wabbit worried enough to hop into the Brambles, Great not tempting me now
Now about 7:45 the darned Wabbit pops back out again, I try to ignore it :rolleyes then I hear a sound behind me to my left so I skew around to take a look, can't see anything, but the sound is now a scrabbling sound, darned it another pesky grey squirrel, this has taken about 5 minutes to suss out, so I swing myself back around and I am just doing a sweep with the old eye balls of the scene in front when Hey Ho! Charlie (Fox) has put in an appearence, I very slowy and carefully lift up the rifle and move it towards him, he is walking along the edge of the padddock right by where the pesky Wabbit was, then behind some low brambles and came out the other side by an entrance going back in to the little brook behind.
All I can really see is his backside, but wait he is sniffing where Mr Wabbits been and turned to the left, I move the crosshair to his shoulder and take up the first pressure. The Fox is still moving slightly, then he hesitates, kaboom! :eek One Winchester 180grn SP finds it's mark, Result one Foxy lying still on his side, an ear flickers and that's all. I reload and wait a few moments watching, all still so I make safe and descend the ladder and walk around the edge to where he is laying, it's a nice condition Dog Fox, beautiful thick Brush, not quite finished molting the winter coat, still has a greyish tinge to it, Wait what's up with the left ear? Oh darn it he must have moved his head as I squeezed:( , the bullet has gone down the ear and through it into the shoulder, the ear is slit right down the width of the bullet:rolleyes he was a nice young mature Dog and would have made a fine mount and I have ruined it >:
The shot was a taken at about 70 yards take a look at him:-
BSA Model E and it's first Varmint.
180grn Winchester .303" bullet went down ear into and through shoulder, for an instant lights out! May be a few more Pheasants, and young Deer will survive this spring now
