I am trying to learn to call in and kill a coyote but with no success. The situation is a a couple acres clear cut that has probably 3 years growth on it like waist high grasses among piles of limbs and tree stumbs. It streachs out to a point on a lake. At the end of the point there is a large hill where u can see the entire thing and the road that leads to the top of the hill. it has mixed woods on both sides and mediocre sign on it, the catch is that i have to use a shotgun because its on WMA i can use a rifle later. I have tried to dying rabbit squeker, i and fawn bleat but nothign i called in some deer one time. i have tried in the afternoon and evenings. i have just got a primos regulator mouth call to use but it is tricky to sound conistant. i where full camo. Another place i am going to try this weekend is a road through a real think forest that has more coyote sign then anywhere i have ever seen i will be able to use my TEXT on this one but visablity is not so good unless overlooking the trail its on my hunt club so i can hunt at night and whatever. Does anyone have any tips on setting up, calling, and all that. Everything i read makes it sound easy if u sit still and call. I really would like to call a yote in but I think i am missing or not doing somthing right. All the books i have read are usual about western coyotes and i think that differs from here in the east. What should i do and try? does a howler work?

Its not easy, just takes a little time to get it right. But when the world turns your way, you`ll get a feeling of accomplishment that you can call and kill consistently. That doesnt mean every outing.I go sometimes four or more outings without a kill.Patience, good cover scent and a good location with optimum concealment will get you started. Also whether mechanical or mouth call,DO NOT CALL CONSTANTLY.Allow a good 10 minutes between your calls. You may pick off the occasional dumb juveniles like that, but the old ones are gonna be wise to you quickly. #nosmileys

Thank you for the welcome Huntress.I suppose I should have stopped in at the welcome thread and posted.A little background on me.I am from Texas and my interests are hunting and handloading.I hunt whitetailed deer, feral hogs and coyotes.I also enjoy fishing for big flathead catfish. I have hunted hogs in your great state as well on the Three lakes, and Bull Creek management areas near Kenansville and the JW Corbett area near Palm Beach.Had a blast and enjoyed your state. I hope I can be a contributing member here with some of the clutter "knowledge" I`ve collected in my head along the way. I will post more pics along the way if that is ok?I have recently discovered how to use my wifes dig cam and am now terrorizng the internet with animal and rifle pics.lol Sincerely G.E. Monk

Coyotes are notorious for circling downwind of a caller, scenting you, then disappearing forever. Always set up just like you would if deer hunting i.e. well downwind of where you think the game will coming in from. Try to set up where they can't get downwind of you. Be as scent free as is possible, full camo, enter your hunt area quietly, sit still and quietly, call and wait 10-15 minutes in sequences.
You mentioned sitting on the hill so you can see far off. Keep in mind that works both ways. The coyotes have eyes like eagles and can likely spot you long before you can spot them so you may be putting yourself on display by sitting on top of the hill.
The only time I have heard coyotes howling and carrying on is at night especially in the early morning hours around 3:00 - 5:00am. I must pizz'em off when I am out there with my Cur dogs.
Callin' & killin' coyotes is much easier anywhere there are lots of them (out West).
Keep trying. Good luck.
