The weather sure doesn't look good for the first part of the season, but I will be out there anyway. I heard lots of gobbling on Lake Cumberland early this week, but I won't hunt there for awhile. I listened Wed. morning where I usually hunt and NOTHING. But, that is not surpising. Usually happens right before the opener. They are there and they are scared. LOL

I've not heard anything here around the house other than some strange sounding owls at the edge of dark. ;D I did see three gobblers (two good ones) and three deer feeding together on Linefork the other day.

No luck today. I only heard one on the roost close enough to hunt. He only gobbled 3 times in the tree and that was the end of the gobbling. Oh well, it was a real nice morning despite the forecast.

My wife and I hunted above the house this morning so we could get back in time for church. We got on one gobbling good on the roost and thought we were in business. Once on the ground....NOTHING. We didn't have time to try to wait him out.
Bad weather for a few days and then they should start getting with it later in the week.

Went to Lake Cumberland for a couple of days of striper fishing and turkey hunting.
Day 1-Got on the water at 1:30 AM for some topwater action and we (Dad & I) only caught 2 throwbacks 23 1/2" long (24" size limit). They were caught on top and at night so it was a blast anyway.
At daybreak I climbed a ridge above a gobbler, but he flew across a cove. I did call a jake in and he stayed w/ me about 20 min. gobbling, but I didn't want to shoot him.
We stopped at another place that we heard one the evening before and sure enough he was gobbling. I climbed up again, called and located him. I then set out my decoy, caught my breath, and called...double gobble and then another gobble.
BUT, then I heard someone else call about 75 yrs above me. That is why he was gobbling so good. I made the decison to not shoot if he comes my way and of course he did. He strutted about 25 yrs from me, hung around awhile, and then walked up the hill. I got to see him go down when the other guy shot. Nice turkey and a nice guy. Glad I let him walk by.
Day 2- Started at 2:30 AM. Caught several stripers and 1 keeper 29" 9#.
I set up on a gobbler about 8:30 after billy goating up a real steep hollow. He came straight to me, except stopped behind a big tree and thicket. He strutted about 15 min. 30 yrds away and I only got 2 glimpes of him. He finally strutted my way and I busted him about 25 yrds away. 20#, 10" beard, 1" spurs.

I got back from the Lake. We caught a few small stripers and a 21" walleye. The first morning turkey hunting spotted a good gobbler on the shoreline strutting. I set up on him and was in great position and then had 5 jakes fly from the other side of the cove and run the gobbler off. Not knowing if they were big ones or jakes I called them up. Dang, 5 jakes. I did have fun making them gobble. Next day I was set up on another one and had him within 75 yards and someone came right in and busted him. He didn't even know he ran him off. He set up where the gobbler was and started calling. I went hunting with my wife this morning and we had one sneak in to us at 8:30. She killed him 15 min later. 3/4 " spurs, and 7" beard.

Dad and I have a place past Jabez at the very end of the pennisula between Wolf Ck and the main lake. We fish/hunt anywhere from Camp Wallace to past Beaver/Otter Ck on the main lake and all the way up Wolfe Ck.
I doubt I will be hunting until the end of the season. Are you still hearing any?

Thanks Chris. I may go back down to the Lake later this week or weekend. If you can time it right, those first few days the hens completely leave a gobbler is the best that it can get. Good luck.
