With the opening of Alabama gun Operation Doe will commence. I live adjacent to a National Forest. We get 3 doe days in the National Forest but full season in my county. This gives me 5 acres to work on the problem, and it is a problem. We have a ton of does and scraggly bucks, way, way too much for the land to support.
So this year I am doing my part for the heard. I am hunting does on my land opposed to bucks in the woods. There are 4 to 5 that inhabbit my yard regularly. One of there bedding areas is on it. It isn't going to be that easy as mama doe (about 5 years old) knows me, but I also know her. She is a marked deer and my primary target.
I preffer hunting the "big" woods but this needs doing. Hopefully after reducing some of the doe numbers I can get down in the "big" woods after some horns.

The best thing I ever did to my land was shoot the piss outta the does. We were seeing 30 deer a day and maybe, if lucky, one buck....and then it would be a raghorn spike or basket six pt.
After we killed about 20 does we now see a good buck for every 15 deer we see.
You just gotta ask yourself, do you want to see a deer behind every tree or maybe not see a deer at all, but if you see one it could very well be a good buck.

Go get 'em. It's tough for one man to make a difference, but you've got to do what you can and hope that others are pulling their end too.
Some of the guys I hunt around think "bucks only" even now. They're too set in their ways to change.

on my land ,i dont kill does.i have 13 buck and 17 doe.many of the little babys are button bucks.i should have about 7 more buck next year ,so doe killing is a no no with me. now if i get to many does which i am not seeing i will take only the 5 or six year old doe out of the group.no way i will kill :)the [piss] out of the doe.ugh, there you go again, commanc, i guess i will be quiet, ha.i also take a kid out with me to get his [first] deer when i do this.all these deer are on less than 100 acres here.no shooting of bucks under six points.i am from pa.

That isn't too bad of numbers. I have 5 on 5 acres. Yes I know they roam around more than that but I also know that there are too many close by. Where the rest of the state in this area has been on full doe days (71 this year). We have had 3 in the National Forest. We are up to 6 this year.
Alabama has a severe deer problem. We have a long season and you are allowed 1 antlered and 1 unatlered on doe days which is all season in most of the state and still the Alabama hunters are not killing enough deer.
The bucks in my area are getting smaller and developing their racks less. Same with the does as well. They are not really gaining much size from year to year.

there is no way of knowing how many and what sex the deer are on my place...I am surrounded by state forest and a federal wildlife refuge...and I read in outdoor magizine that a buck can roam/home range over 20 miles...all I know is that since I've started taking more does and asking guests to take a doe if they see it (if it's not during the rut) the bucks have become bigger and I am seeing and shooting alot more bucks
