The comments below came from a local forum ( www.satilla.com ). Looks like there are still a few old stereotypes hanging around. What do you think? 'You know, I laugh when I see trucks parked along a dirt road and men in orange vests standing beside their trucks, chewing tobacco, hanging out, drinking beer---they call themselves hunters! What are you hunting on the side of the road? Oh, I get it! The dogs do all the work and the men take all the glory...Gotcha'

There is people like that just about on every board out there. We have one here that has rubbed me the wrong way several times with it's trophy or nothing attitude. I know a few members that have taken good bucks, but would rather not post pics because they would be told that the deer would be a "good one" in a couple years.

Ef 'em. I used to be a snotty acting still hunter that thought the same thing. Now I am a former still hunter (I plan on making return the rifle some next year) with a better understanding that a well run dog hunt is way tougher than scouting and shooting a deer that is standing still. I am not against still hunting at all now that I am a dog hunter. What I am is a hunter (that would rather be wing shooting than anything else) that understands that we are all in this together and we all need each other if hunting is to survive. I can not see the need to shoot a bear but I have nothing against a man that does and that is how we should all look at other legal forms of hunting. These people are doing what they enjoy and if you don't like it or understand it and it is legal leave them alone. Now there have been a lot of bad deer doggin' clubs over the years that have given the good guys, like Bil and I, a bad name but they are the exception not the rule. My open invitation to the members of this board stands. Anyone that would like to come spend whole day in the woods deer doggin you are welcome to come with me. We will start with breakfast in our clubhouse(grits, eggs, bacon sausage, toast and coffee). We will make two drives in the morning and break for lunch. We will make two drives in the afternoon and then divide up all the meat.(you will get meat whether you kill or not, usually 1/2 deer). Then we will go done to the creek and grill out and have adult beverages.
Oh yeah and if you get lucky enough to have deer run by you you can see just easy it is to kill a running deer. If you don't get bit by the sound of a pack beagles, red ticks, blue ticks, black and tans running a deer you might be gay. ;D

I wish we could get some of these humyucks down to Briar Creek Sportsman Club for some drives this year. We have had some humdingers. A deer came by me Saturday that had at least twenty dogs burnin' her butt up. I couldn't shoot because the race was soundin' too good to end it.

Everyone has the idea that dog hunting is easy or for the lazy man. They forget about the dogs. And the time put into them..All the days we go out 365 days a year to feed and water them rain or shine. All the cleaning and repair to pens the shots and worming you do..The breeding of dogs and raising pups and training them.there is not a day all year long we don't do something with or for the dogs. When deer season is over and many hunters are in the house where it is nice and warm.I'm out feeding and putting out fresh water and fresh dry bedding for my dogs.
then they are many that don't understand dog hunting..For me and this is just my opinion. But dog hunting is not about killing a deer. Its about the dogs!I can have a great day of hunting and a good time and never see a deer..just the sound of my pack running a hot race right is what I'm after and what I want.If I kill a deer its a plus, but its not a must for me to have a good day.I understand why Shorthair didn't shoot the deer..It was about the dogs and the race not about killing a deer.
If I'm on the side of the road trying to catch my dogs I'm not hurting anyone..But some think thats all we do or want to complain because they see us setting and talking with friends..i have never understood why,if I'm setting there trying to catch my dogs and a friend pulls up to help and talk while were there..That, that is hurting anyone.I don't see what the big deal is..
And yes it is true I can kill more deer still hunting..but its just not as much fun as dog hunting. And the fact is,And this is just me and my opinion..but I still hunted for years and it got to where killing a deer did nothing for me.I remember when I got the rush and my heart would pound when I killed a deer..But I don't have that anymore. I wish I did!I carried the kids squirrel hunting this year. And I got more of a rush out of killing them than I do killing a deer still hunting.
But on the other hand I can get the rush from hearing my dogs run a deer to me.But hit or miss that rush doesn't change..so for me it is truly about the dogs and not the deer..
If they were to outlaw dog hunting for deer..I would get me a pack of rabbit dogs and give up deer hunting all together. But thats just me.
