I sent one to my dad for his birthday with a refill pack because of the reviews it got on the "old SHF" ;D.
He hasn't mentioned it. He probably hasn't used it yet. It was better than a tie.

What are thermo cells? A heater or skeeter chaser? Or both?

I broke down and bought one. Guess what, they work exactly as described. It is nice to not have skeets pounding me while trying to be still in a deer stand.
I had heard of others loosing their camo unit in the woods so I bought the cheaper white one. It will be much easier to keep track of. Refills are six bucks and some change locally. I discovered there is not enough butane in the cartridge to burn up the three repellant pads that come with each refill pak. Someone wrote that some cheap off brand butane cartridges can be found in the hair curler section at WalMart but I haven't looked there yet. If anyone has any info about this be sure to let us know.
I have had some deer right under and very near my stand while the Thermocell was burning and they never smelled anything that I am aware of but because these units do produce some odor, I am sure the deer can smell it and me if they get directly downwind at some distance. The fact probably is they would have likely smelled you anyway. In my opinion to add any odor into your hunting area is compromising your chances of seeing deer and keeping deer in the area, so be sure to try and keep your setups downwind from the deer and their travel paterns.
Good Luck.

right now I have a couple things of the butane gas and about 20 pads. The gas definately uses up before the three pads.
Lately I have been averaging one pad per bottle of butane.
I do love the thermocell too!
I have started using mine if a see one mosquito..I guess we are getting spoiled. I remember if I only got bit by 100 an evening I thought I was doing good. LOL

they do have some for cordless curling irons...i actually have some but never knew you could use them in the thermocell....they are in the hair dryer/curling iron section at walmart and if i remember correctly they are cheaper.
ken- a thermocell is a skeeter repellant ...runs off butane...slight smell but doesn't phase the critters...had a doe come by my stand while it was on the ground (wind blowin' right to her) and she never even raised her head. they are AWESOME.
another hint- get some heavy duty velcro ...put a piece on the unit and one on your stand and you'll never have to worry about knockin' it off while in your stand.
